Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes talk about the challenges in Dyesebel

The likes of Edna Luna, Vilma Santos, Alma Moreno, Alice Dixson, and Charlene Gonzalez have one thing in common: famous fins. They all have graced the big screen wearing nothing but a tail and a couple of seashells, carrying the famous name of Dyesebel.

GMA-7 brings back Dyesebel—but on primetime TV, picking none other than Marian Rivera to give new life to the fish-tailed princess. Once again, she is paired with MariMar co-star Dingdong Dantes. This comes as a as challenge for them to bring new life their successful love team and offer something new to the viewers.

Fresh from their set in Coron, Palawan, Marian and Dingdong graced Showbiz Central yesterday, April 20, as they talked about the physical and emotional challenges of making the show and waited with the fans for the unveiling of the new Dyesebel billboard in front of GMA Network Center.

UNDER THE SEA. Showbiz Central host Pia Guanio commented on Marian's sacrifices for Dyesebel.

"Marian, pinapanood ko pa lang ang footage ng shooting mo sa Palawan, eh, parang hirap na hirap ako. But first, getting into the costume. Mahirap ba na isuot ang buntot mo, yung headdress mo? How did you manage to stay so beautiful kahit underwater at napaka-hirap ng mga eksena?"

"Siguro sa tulong na din ng makeup artist ko," Marian replied. "Tapos yung buntot, nilalagay na lang siya ‘pag nasa tubig na ako. Kasi mas mahirap ‘pag wala ako sa tubig. So, sa tubig ko siya nilalagay."

Pia followed, "Of course, Dingdong has had some experience shooting underwater scenes in the past. One of your problems is not being able to sink. Kasi naman, sa kaseksihan ni Marian, eh, paano ba naman ‘yan lulubog sa tubig? Dingdong, anong mga tips ang binigay mo kay Marian to help her out?"

"Mahirap talaga yung ginagawa niya," Dingdong admitted. "As in kailangan pang maglagay ng pabigat, ‘tapos at the same time, malamig pa sa ilalim ng tubig. Kaya sinasabi ko parati sa kanya na to relax lang talaga."

"Marian, we know for a fact na one of the scenes, talagang iniyakan mo sa hirap," Pia said as Marian laughed. "And of course, hindi ka naman namin masisisi. Talagang mahirap talaga mga eksena mo. This was your last scene na kinuha sa Palawan wherein si Dyesebel, kinailangan iaangat sa tubig si Fredo [Dingdong's character]. Alam na namin yung kwento mo tungkol diyan. Pero ikaw Dingdong, nahirapan ka din ba sa eksenang yun?"

"Actually, ako kasi, parang walang malay ako doon, unconscious ako. So hinihintay ko lang siya [Marian] na dumating at sagipin ako. Nagawa naman namin, eh, yung first part."

"But you could feel her frustration?" Pia followed.

"Very much," Dingdong answered. "Kasi four, five days kami sa Palawan. Noong umpisa pa lang, mula araw hanggang mawalan ng araw, eh, talagang nasa ilalim ng tubig. Hindi siya umaahon unless ‘pag kumakain lang...or nagsi-CR."

ROLE PLAYING. Dingdong's joke brought about screams as Pia could hardly hear her next question to Dingdong and Marian. Luckily, she was able to bring her question across when she asked a second time.

"Of course, unprecedented talaga ‘yung love team ninyong dalawa. Everybody is wondering kung papaano ninyo iibahin yung atake ninyo sa love team ninyo sa Dyesebel at what you did as Sergio and Marimar."

Marian offered to answer first by saying, "Madaming kaibahan din and siyempre, ibang-iba si Marimar kay Dyesebel. Kasi si Dyesebel kasi, sobrang pilya. Light din ang buhay para sa kanya."

“Si Fredo [naman] mas seryoso sa buhay,” Dingdong said as an introduction to his character, describing him as bugnutin and masungit. “Tapos ‘pag makikilala niya si Dyesebel, mag-iiba ‘yung buhay niya dahil kay Dyesebel.”

Pia then asked when the two will be returning to Palawan.

"Ngayon, ine-explore pa namin yung iba't-ibang lugar," Dingdong replied. "Bataan, at meron din kami sa Bulacan. Hangga't hindi tag-ulan."

"Pero it's not all fun and games. Alam kong si Marian madalas masugatan sa corals," Pia suddenly asked. "Nasugatan while shooting the underwater scenes. Is that true Marian?"

Marian replied, "Opo, kasi sa tubig ang hirap talagang dumilat at malabo pa yung mata ko. So, nagma-mask muna ako pero hindi ko rin maiwasan na minsan nasasadsad din ako sa mga corals na."

Bianca King takes her villain role in Dyesebel seriously

Young actress Bianca King says she is doing everything to effectively portray the role of Betty in the top-rating GMA-7 telefantasya Dyesebel. Aside from putting bangs on her hair, Bianca said that she also hired a personal stylist for the clothes that she would be wearing in the said telefantasya.

In an interview with Bianca yesterday, May 14, during the renewal of her contract with Dermstrata at Circle Café on Tomas Morato Avenue, Quezon City, she explained, "Para kay Betty, actually, para panibagong look. Kasi, di ba, si Betty model siya? So gusto ko talaga yung model look. Pati yung mga outfit sa Dyesebel, nagha-hire ako ng personal stylist para kapag every time I come out in every scene, talagang attention-grabber yung character."

Bianca related how serious she is in playing this kontrabida role. "I really put a lot of thought into how she look, how she presents herself, even how she speaks, kasi sabi ni Direk Joyce [Bernal], sobrang arte talaga."

The 22-year-old actress said that she constantly talks with Marian [Rivera] about their scenes. "Ang napag-usapan kasi namin ni Marian, bago kami gagawa ng scene na ganun, pag-usapan muna namin nang mabuti. Para hindi yung basta gagawin na lang namin yung eksena, 'tapos hindi na nga kami nagpapansinan.

"Kasi na-mention niya nga na before, hindi sila masyadong naging okay ni Katrina [Halili] kaya hindi sila nag-uusap. E, kami ni Marian, we make it a point na kapag wala kaming eksena, nag-uusap talaga kami. 'Tapos kapag may eksena na medyo magkakasakitan kami, pinag-uusapan namin nang mabuti para malinis yung pagkagawa."

READY TO BE HATED BY FANS. Since one of her goals is to be an effective kontrabida in Dyesebel, is Bianca ready be hated by the show's avid viewers and fans?

"I think for the past three years kontrabida na ako, I think wala na yun, hindi na yun factor, e. Sa totoo lang, hindi ko iniisip kung ano yung magiging reaction ng mga tao. Like, hindi ako nagwo-worry kung mahe-hate ba ako ng mga tao," she said.

She added that she is just happy to have a bigger role like Betty. "Masaya ako na nagkaroon ako ng role na ganito. Parang through the last two years, paakyat nang paakyat yung mga roles ko, slowly but surely. Pero happy ako sa ganun, hindi ko na masyadong iniisip kung ano yung mga sasabihin ng tao."

However, Bianca admitted that she does not want to get stuck in kontrabida roles.

"May hangganan din yun, siyempre I've only been in the business for four years so medyo mahaba pa yung pupuntahan ko sana. It's a matter of putting our foot down na sana the next show after that [Dyesebel], makasubok din naman ako ng kahit na hindi bida basta yung non-kontrabida role. Siyempre goal din yun for me now and pagbubutihan ko na lang talaga sa role ko ngayon to prove that I can carry bigger role," she told the Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP).

CLAMMING UP ABOUT CHAMP. Bianca did not get away from the question about Hale band member Champ Lui-Pio, who is being linked to her for quite sometime now. Champ recently joined the roster of talents of Arnold Vegafria, who also takes care of Bianca's showbiz career.

Bianca dismissed rumors that Champ became Arnold's talent because of her. Instead of explaining, she just said, "Happy ako for him kasi nakahanap na siya ng manager na mag-aalaga sa kanya, 'tapos tutulungan silang i-promote yung album nila. Yun naman ang importante, e. It really has nothing to do with me."

She added, "Si Arnold talagang dati pang gusto silang [Hale] i-manage kasi kaibigan ng father ni Champ si Arnold. Even way, way back pa, noong mag-uupisa pa lang po sila, hinihingi na ni Arnold ang Hale sa father ni Champ."

When asked about the rumored relationship between her and Champ, Bianca simply replied, "I prefer not talking about those things."

"IT FEELS GOOD TO BE ADMIRED." During the interview, Bianca also mentioned, "Happy ako sa life talaga, sobrang happy."

A GMA-7 reporter then intrigued her with, "Nakakadagdag ba si Champ sa pagiging happy mo?"

Bianca indirectly answered, "Nakakadagdag yung alam kong mayroong mga taong may gusto [sa akin]. Hindi, basta magandang feeling para sa girl yung alam niyang may nag-a-admire sa kanya, 'tapos siyempre nakakaganda ng aura."

Again, the same reporter asked, "Okay lang ba na i-share mo sa amin kung ano'ng level na kayo [ni Champ]?"

Bianca hesitated and said, "Basta yung area na yun siguro prepared na talaga ako na maging serious, at saka ako magiging upfront about it."

She then related her opinion about keeping her private life to herself. "'Yong prinsipyo ko sa pagiging artista, kung ibubuhos mo yung 100 percent ng private life mo, lalo kang idya-judge ng tao. Yung about relationship, pagpipiyestahan ng tao, lalong magiging mahirap for you to recover.

"Para sa akin, okay lang na may hint yung mga tao. Parang ‘what you see is what you get.' Pero ayaw kong i-hard sell kung anuman yung nangyayari sa private life ko. Kasi, ano rin, e, I don't believe in capitalizing in my private life."

Lastly, the Dyesebel actress was asked, "In love ka ba ngayon?"

She paused and replied with a smile, "Ask me again in a few months!" - PEP

Nagkaroon na ng pictorial nitong nakaraang Sunday, May 25, ang tatlo sa magiging bida ng bagong GMA Sine Novela na Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan.

Ito ay pagbibidahan nina Sunshine Dizon as Lily, Marvin Agustin as Louie at Diana Zubiri as Elsa. Papalitan nito ang malapit nang matapos na Kaputol ng Isang Awit nina Glaiza de Castro at Lovi Poe.

Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan was produced by Viva Films in 1982 at pinagbidahan ito nina Vilma Santos, Hilda Koronel, and the late Dindo Fernando. Ang original movie ay mula sa story and screenplay ni Tom Adrales at direksyon ni Danny Zialcita. Ang iba pang nakasama sa classic film na ito ay sina Chanda Romero, Tommy Abuel, Suzanne Gonzalez, at ang child actor noon na si Alvin Enriquez.

Galing nga sa pelikulang ito ang immortal movie line na binitawan ni Hilda Koronel sa eksena nila ni Dindo Fernando: "You are supposed to be the father of a sick boy and not the willing husband of his mother! That was the arrangement, Louie!"

Ito nga ang bagong drama show ni Sunshine after ng magkakasunod na pagbibida niya sa mga GMA primetime dramas na Encantadia, Etheria, Bakekang, Impostora at La Vendetta. Huli siyang napanood bilang si Ragona sa GMA telefantasyag nilikha ni Carlo J. Caparas na Kamandag na pinagbidahan ni Richard Gutierrez. Ang Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan ang first time na makakatrabaho niya si Marvin Agustin.

Last February ay naka-graduate na si Sunshine sa kanyang kurso in culinary arts sa Academy for International Culinary Arts.

Ito naman ang ika-anim na drama show ni Marvin Agustin since lumipat siya mula ABS-CBN 2 to GMA-7. Una siyang lumabas sa light romance drama na I Luv NY at sinundan pa ito ng Asian Treasures, Mga Mata ni Anghelita, MariMar at ang malapit nang matapos na Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita.

Pang-pitong drama show naman na ito ng sexy actress na si Diana Zubiri. Una siyang nabigyan ng break sa Encantadia at nasundan pa ito ng Etheria, Now And Forever Presents Linlang, Asian Treasures, Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan at Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita. Mainstay naman si Diana sa longest running gag show na Bubble Gang.

Katrina Halili leaves sexy contravida roles to Iwa Moto

Mula na mismo kay Katrina Halili, tanggap niya na si Iwa Moto ang puwedeng pumalit sa kanyang trono bilang sexy contravida ng GMA-7.

Sa naging press launch ng GMA Sine Novela na Magdusa Ka, kung saan magbibida na si Katrina, natanong sa kanya kung payag na ba siya na ang kasunod na sa kanyang iiwan na trono bilang sexy contravida ay si Iwa Moto? Wala namang tanggi si Katrina rito.

"Oo naman. Puwedeng-puwede na si Iwa," ngiti pa ni Katrina. "Si Iwa kasi, iba ang dating niya. Sabi nga nila, pareho kaming malakas ang dating. Kahit ano ang lumabas sa bibig namin, nagiging malaking issue. 'Yan ang napapansin ko kay Iwa. Kontrobersyal siya na hindi niya sinasadya.

"Pero depende naman ‘yan sa taste ng mga bumoboto sa FHM, eh. Kung sa tingin nila na pasok na si Iwa at puwede na akong palitan, okey lang. Hindi big deal sa akin ‘yon. Ako lang naman ang twice na tinanghal at back-to-back pa, ‘di ba?

Firsts in Philippine cinema seen in I.T.A.L.Y.

In a press release sent to the Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP), ang tatlong continents na pinuntahan ng cast and crew ng latest GMA Films project na ito ay Europe, Africa, at Asia.

Nagsimula ang shooting with the cast and crew traveling from the Philippines to Amsterdam, then to Milan, both by plane. Pagkatapos na mag-shoot ng mga
eksena roon ay nag-train naman sila from Milan to Genoa and stopping at Venice to shoot again. Then, boarding a train again, they went to Savona; dito nakadaong ang giant Italian luxury ship, Costa Magica, kung saan nag-shooting pa sila.

Pumalaot ang cruise ship sa Naples at Palermo, Italy, then to Tunisia in Africa, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona in Spain, at Marseilles, France. Ang huling stop ay sa Rome. Gumamit din ang I.T.A.L.Y. ng Italian actors. The rest of the shoot will be here in the Philippines.

"FIRSTS" IN PHILIPPINE CINEMA. Ayon sa press release, ang pagsu-shoot sa tatlong kontinente at sa giant luxury ship, at pag-hire ng Italian actors for the movie ay pawang mga "first" sa Philippine moviemaking. Ito na rin daw marahil ang grandest project ng GMA Films.

All praises si Jolens sa kanilang direktor na si Mark Reyes, who highlighted not only the scenic spots but also the most unlikely corners of each location.

"Very realistic ang approach ni Direk Mark dahil ipinapakita niya pati yung mga suluk-sulok at eskinita ng mga locations namin. Kaya tuloy mafi-feel ng mga manonood yung totoong characteristic ng isang lugar at yung mood namin sa story," 'ika ni Jolina sa press release.

GRATEFUL JOLENS. Grateful si Jolina sa GMA Films for pushing through with the movie, kahit na nag-pull-out ang original na leading man niya sa movie na si Gabby Concepcion. Grateful din daw siya kay Dennis for accepting the role na iniwan ni Gabby, kay Rufa Mae and Eugene for joining the cast, at kina Mark at Rhian na nakatrabaho na rin daw niya in the past.

Malaki rin ang pasasalamat ni Jolens sa GMA Films executives na sina Annette Gozon-Abrogar at Joey Abacan for being hands-on sa proyektong ito, kay writer Senedy Que sa pag-develop ng story which highlights the working condition and sentiments of OFWs working in a cruise ship, at kay line producer Elaine Lozano who faced a daunting task doing a project in
unfamiliar places.

Kahit na may minor problems at last-minute changes, maganda pa rin daw ang naging takbo ng shooting ng I.T.A.L.Y. at nakumpleto ang mga eksena ayon sa schedule.

Direk Mark credits this to the professionalism of his actors: "Maganda ang composition ng cast dahil professional lahat, walang nag-inarte at nag-primadona. Kahit mahirap ang trabaho, pinagaan ng magandang samahan." - PEP

The 25-year-old singer admitted that even he himself was not aware of the plans his management had in store for him. He says that the move to do PDA was a bit of a surprise because he was busy concentrating on preparing for his new album, which will probably be released by next year. “Honestly I was not expecting anything at this point. I’m actually supposed to be mixing the album with my production company and then this happened,” he admits. Although he said that the decision to suddenly switch networks was out of his hands, the singer says that he would rather dwell on the positive effects of the move. “This is my first time talking about it since it was discussed and that’s why I’m actually kind of nervous pero I think the main thing is for me is that it’s always a pleasure just to come back to the Philippines, no matter where I go. And yung mga sumusuporta sa akin, I really appreciate it kasi I’ve really just lifted everything to God. It’s all up to him. Wherever he takes me, I’m there. Billy also denied the rumor that he refuses to see his showbiz mentor while he’s here. “That’s nonsense. I would never say that,” he says. Contrary to that, Billy says he even used to keep in touch with Kuya Germs even when he was abroad. “Kuya Germs has been my father and will always be my father in showbiz. For example, isang anak na hindi pinapayagan umalis for college. Somewhere where the parents don’t want the kid to grow up and go to college. Then all of a sudden, this kid grows up, goes to that college he wants to go to and becomes very successful at the end of the day. He’s going to make his parents proud. And that’s all I want to do for Kuya Germs. I do want to make him proud. And I do love Kuya Germs with all my heart. He is a father to me. No matter what anybody says. Tatay ko yun. If someone talks in a negative way about Kuya Germs, they’ll also deal with me. I want to address this issue but I’d rather talk to him face to face,” Billy explains. ‘Caregiver’ rakes P15 million on opening day

As the son of renowned film director Marilou Diaz-Abaya, you would think that Marc Abaya would have had plenty of opportunities to explore showbiz while he was growing up. But since his mom wanted him to become...

either a priest or a doctor, a showbiz career was not an option, at least until now.

Marc is trying out acting on TV for the first time, playing one of Roxanne Guinoo’s leading men in the new afternoon teleserye Ligaw na Bulaklak. While his family wasn’t against his decision to try acting, it was something that took them by surprise.

“My mother and brother really sheltered me from the showbiz world... I didn’t really know how important my mom was [in the showbiz industry], until I was in high school,” he reveals. “When this show came up, I told her about it and she was so calm [about the whole thing].”

Marc is proud that his mom fully supports him in whatever he takes on. He’s been a VJ for some years now as well as the vocalist for local band Kjwan. “I became a musician. Running around without my shirt, sweating, freaking out in front of people… That was the first time that she had to take in what I was doing,” he shares.

Angel Locsin's manager says the young actress is not competing with Marian Rivera

Naging malaking isyu ang pag-e-endorse ni Marian Rivera ng Jag jeans dahil pinalitan niya si Angel Locsin. Matatandaang si Marian din ang pumalit nang hindi tanggapin ni Angel ang role sa hit series ng GMA-7 na Marimar, na nagluklok kay Marian sa kasikatan; si Angel naman ay piniling lumipat sa ABS-CBN. Magmula noon ay pinagtatapat na palagi sina Angel at Marian.

Nakausap ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ang manager ni Angel na si Becky Aguila. Pinabulaanan nito ang balita na nilaglag ng Jag si Angel in favor of Marian. Ayon kay Becky, hindi na sila nag-renew ng kontrata sa nasabing jeans line.

"Noong May 16 pa nag-expire ang kontrata ni Angel sa Jag. Pero last March pa ay napag-usapan na namin ng Jag na hindi na kami magre-renew. It was a mutual decision," pahayag ni Becky.

For two years, Angel has been a Jag endorser. Ayon sa manager ng young actress, siguro it's about time na rin to let go.

Paliwanag ni Becky, "May offer din kasi kami for another clothing...

Tulad ng Jag ay malaki rin daw garment company ang bagong endorsement na ito ni Angel. Abangan na lang daw dahil dating endorser nito ang aktres na si Claudine Barretto.

"I just want to make it clear that Angel is not competing with Marian," sabi ni Becky. "She minds her own business. For whatever commercial projects Marian's been getting, I'm sure Angel is happy for her.

"Angel right now is so engrossed and concentrated in Lobo. She doesn't have the time to dwell on petty issues being thrown at her. Intrigues are part of showbiz life. Star Records still manages Charice Pempengco despite guest appearances abroad

Kilalang-kilala na ngayon ang young singer na si Charice Pempengco, hindi lamang dito sa Pilipinas kundi pati sa ibang bansa.

Ilan sa mga napuntahan na ng dalagang singer ay ang Star King (Korea), Paul O' Brady (London), The Ellen DeGeneres Show (America), at Oprah (U.S.). Bukod pa rito, nakasama na rin niya sa isang concert tribute para sa American songwriter na si David Foster ang ilang sikat na music artists tulad nina Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, at John Mayer sa Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, Nevada kamakailan.

ilan kung hawak din ng Star Records ang kanyang bookings sa ibang bansa.

Sa press conference na inihanda para kay Charice noong May 29 sa 9501 restaurant ng ABS-CBN, sinabi ng Star Records marketing unit head na si Nixon Sy na Star Records pa rin ang nangangasiwa sa mga ito, subalit may agent din si Charice sa U.S.

"Actually, ang nangyayari, lahat ng mga bookings niya from [Star Records], 'tapos sa U.S. parang mayroon din siyang parang agent doon," paliwanag ni Sy.

Dagdag pa niya, "Basically, lahat nakaayos, lahat ng schedules niya. Like, example, this time to this time nasa U.S. siya. So pagkabalik [ni Charice] dito, nakalatag na lahat ng mga plano."

Sa ngayon, wala pang naka-schedule para kay Charice na show na'tulad ng mga unang nabanggit, ngunit babalik siya sa U.S. para sa isang concert series na handog ng The Filipino Channel (TFC). Sa katunayan, lumipad si Charice kahapon, May 30, patungong U.S. para rito.

Babalik si Charice sa June 12 para naman maghanda sa inaabangang concert ng Air Supply sa June 14 kung saan isa siya sa mga napiling special guest.

MAJOR CONCERT. Pagkatapos ng exposures abroad, inaasahan din ng fans ni Charice ang pagkakaroon niya ng solo concert. Ngunit kay Mr. Sy ng Star Records, wala pang definite plans para sa major concert ni Charice.

Aniya, pinaghahandaan naman pero, "Siyempre, in terms of career management, inaayos lang din muna namin siya. Kasi parang for a 15 years old, 'tapos nag-concert na, what's the next? Alam mo yun? Kasi baka malula lang din siya, biglang mayroong concert na agad."

Nangamba naman ang ilang media na baka magbago na ang boses ni Charice sa panahong magkakaroon siya ng solo concert.

"Hindi naman po siguro," mahinhing sagot ni Charice. "Kasi noong age ko ng 13, kumbaga nagbago po ang voice ko, as in hindi ko po noon maabot lahat yung...like yung kinakanta ko po ngayon. Siguro po parang sa lalaki po nagbibinata, so parang sa akin, nagkaroon po siya ng hindi magandang... Para po sa akin, siguro habang lumalaki po ako, nade-develop [yung voice ko]."

CHANGING HER NAME. Sa kanyang TV guestings abroad, kapansin-pansin ang paiba-ibang bigkas ng mga host sa apelyido ni Charice na "Pempengco." Ito diumano ang dahilan kung bakit sa kanyang self-titled debut album ay tanging "Charice" lamang ang nakalagay.

Kaugnay nito, pinabulaanan ni Charice na kaya niya tinanggal ang kanyang apelyido ay dahil sa usap-usapan na ayaw itong ipagamit ng kanyang ama.

"Actually, hindi naman po talaga na-drop," sabi ni Charice. "Kumbaga kasi po, di ba, lahat tayo napanood n'yo po yung mga guestings ko po sa American TV shows, as in parang iba-iba po yung pronunciation [ng Pempengco]. So, Charice na lang po para mas mabilis pong matandaan ng mga tao. Kahit po sa America, di ba, mas maganda po kung sasabihin nila, ‘Charice.'"

Dagdag pang paglilinaw ni Mr. Sy, "Actually, parang yun din kasi ang [ginagawa] ng ibang star, e. Parang Pempengco, mahaba din kasi for a 15-year-old. It's better off na rin kasi, the easy way, parang Charice na lang po."

BETTER PERFORMANCE ABROAD. Sa pocket press conference, napag-usapan din ang performance ni Charice dito at sa abroad. Isang miyembro ng media ang nagpahayag na kakaiba raw ang pagkanta ni Charice kapag nasa abroad kumpara sa performance niya sa ASAP.

Sabi nito, mas maganda raw ang boses niya kapag kumakanta siya sa ibang bansa at kung sa ASAP naman daw ay tila bitin ang kanyang performance.

Paliwanag naman ni Charice, "Depende po 'yon sa mga kantang ibinibigay. Kasi mostly po ng mga kanta po na binibigay sa akin sa ASAP, minsan po fast song. Minsan po yung kanta po na binibigay sa akin sa TV shows, mga ballad. Yung ASAP po, binibigyan nila ako ng fast songs kasi po siyempre parang tina-try nila para makita nila yung versatility ko."

Ipinaliwanag din ng batang singer na ganito rin ang dahilan kung bakit halos pare-pareho ang kinakanta niya kapag nagpe-perform siya abroad. Aniya, "'Tapos po kasi sa ibang bansa, nire-request po nila yung mga talagang birit kaya po talagang naiiba po yung performance ko."

Isa pang dahilan kung bakit madalas niyang kantahin ang Whitney Houston original na "I Will Always Love You" ay dahil isa ito sa kanyang mga paborito.

Para kay Charice, "Kasi po yung 'I Will Always Love You Po,' bata pa lang ako yun na po yung ipinanlalaban ko sa contests. Siyempre po, yung mommy ko po kasi sa banda po siya dati. Yung mga kinakanta po niya mga ganun type of songs. So parang naeengganyo po ako, yun na rin po ang nahiligan ko."

Sa mga naganap sa kanya, batid ni Charice ang malaking pagbabago sa kanyang buhay. "Ngayon po, marami pong nakakakilala sa akin," pahayag niya. "'Tapos nakakatuwa po kasi lahat po sila sinasabi sa akin proud daw po sila sa akin. Kumbaga, 'yong mga eksena na nangyayari ngayon, parang 'yon po yung gustung-gusto ko."

Gayunman, may isa pa ring kahilingan si Charice para sa kanyang ika-15 na kaarawan noong May 10: "Sana po kung ano po yung natatanggap kong blessings ngayon, sana po mas marami pa pong dumating. At saka sana po maging proud po sa akin yung ibang Filipinos."

Nakangiting sinagot ng young actress na si Marian Rivera ang tanong sa kanya ng mga TV reporters sa launching niya bilang bagong endorser ng Jag kaninang hapon, May 30, tungkol sa hindi mamatay-matay na issue ng YouTube scandal niya. Apektado ba siya sa issue?

"Hindi na po ako nagpapaapekto," nakatawang sagot ni Marian. "Kahit po ilabas nila 'yon maya't maya, mas lalo kong napapatunayan na...

marami palang nagmamahal at nagtitiwala sa akin, isa na po rito ang Jag.

"Hindi ko pa po nakikita ang video, pero kung mauulit po ‘yon ulit, ganoon pa rin ang gagawin ko, ipagtatanggol ko pa rin ang sarili ko. Wala po akong makitang masama sa ginawa ko, nagpakatotoo lang ako. Baka po kasi akala nila dahil lagi akong kinukutus-kutusan sa Dyesebel, ganoon na rin ako sa personal. Sana po ay maisip nilang mga artista kami na nagtatrabaho at nagbibigay ng kasiyahan sa mga manonood, pero huwag po naman nila kaming babastusin, dahil mga tao rin kaming nasasaktan at marunong ding magtanggol sa aming sarili.

"Nalungkot lang po ako noong una dahil sa napanood nila, hinusgahan na nila agad ako nang hindi muna nila inalam ang totoong nangyari. Pero sabi nga po nila, hindi mo puwedeng ma-please ang lahat ng tao. Pero ako po, simula nang pumasok ako sa showbiz, ganito na po ako, walang nabago sa akin. Ako pa rin ‘yong kikay, makulit, totoong tao.

"Lalo pong pinalakas ng mga nagmamahal sa akin ang loob ko. Minsan, nag-shopping kami ng manager ko [Popoy Caritativo] sa Greenbelt, may mga lumapit sa akin na dapat daw ay sinapak ko ‘yong lalaki. Natawa rin po ako sa message ng Gabriela sa akin na mabait pa raw ako, dapat daw ay idinemanda ko ‘yong lalaki.

"Noong umuwi naman ako last week sa Cavite, ang daming tao sa may gate namin. Natawa ako sa mga batang kapitbahay ko. Nasaan daw ‘yong lalake [sa YouTube], bubugbugin nila. May nagsumbong din po sa amin na may ilang TV reporters na nagtatanong kung masama raw po ba talaga ang ugali ko, pero wala silang nakuhang negative na sagot sa mga kapitbahay namin.

"Kahit po ang mga kasama ko sa trabaho, si Nanay Rita [Avila], Nanay Perla [Bautista], sina Nadine [Samonte], si Bianca [King] at ‘yong boyfriend niya [Champ Lui-Pio], tinext nila ako at wala raw silang nakitang masama sa ginawa ko, ipinagtanggol ko lang daw naman ang sarili ko, kaya thankful po ako sa kanilang lahat," pahayag ni Marian.

INTENTIONAL? May nagsasabing baka raw intentional ang pag-provoke sa kanya ng lalake sa YouTube. May nagsabi namang baka fan niya ang gumawa noon. Ano ang masasabi ni Marian dito?

"Kung intentional man po, wala po akong alam," sagot niya. "Nakakalungkot lang po kung totoo ‘yon, na bakit may mga taong kapag nagiging successful, gusto nilang ibaba? Nagpapakahirap po akong magtrabaho at ayoko pong sayangin ang opportunities na dumarating sa akin.

"Para naman pong hindi gagawin ‘yon ng fan ko. Kasi kung fan ko ‘yon at nginitian ko, dahil nakangiti ako nang una kong kinausap ‘yong lalaki, tiyak pong matutuwa ‘yon at baka makalimutan na akong i-video.

"Bumalik po 'yong lalaki sa taping kinabukasan, at sinabi niyang hindi raw niya gustong magsalita at hindi raw niya sinasadya. Hindi na po ako ang nakipag-usap sa kanya, ang executive producer ko na po ang nakausap niya. Ang ipinagtataka ko lang po talaga, ang tagal nang nangyari ‘yon, bakit ngayon lang lumabas?

"Basta ang masasabi ko na lang po, anuman ang ginagawa nila laban sa akin, ipinapasa-Diyos ko na lang lahat. Ipinagdarasal ko sila at bahala na si God sa kanila," nakangiting saad ni Marian.

THE NEW FACE OF JAG. Bago dumating si Marian sa presscon ay nakausap din ng PEP si Epoy Arcino, creative director ng Jag, at ang styliist nila na si Erick. Tinanong namin sila kung bakit si Marian ang pinili nilang next endorser after ni Angel Locsin, na naging endorser naman nila for two years.

"We want a new face, dahil we will bring Jag to the next level—more sexier and hotter," wika ni Epoy. "And we find them in Marian. Saka nag-survey kami at si Marian ang unanimous na pinili nilang maging bagong endorser.

"Hindi pa tapos ang contract ni Angel sa amin," paglilinaw ni Epoy. Pero aniya, "May negotiations na kami sa kanila ng manager niya [Marian], last March pa. She will sign her contract today, and hopefully, makasingit kami sa busy schedules niya para makapag-pictorial kami sa Australia, magkasama sila ni Will."

Noong March pa pala sila nakipag-negotiate kay Marian, hindi ba nagbago ang isip nila ngayong naglabasan ang mga scandal daw ni Marian sa YouTube?

"No, hindi nagbago ang desisyon namin. Alam naming common na 'yon sa mga celebrities at hindi kami naniniwalang makakaapekto 'yon sa popularity niya," sabi ng creative director ng Jag.

Tumanggi namang sumagot si Marian sa reaksiyon niya na siya ang pumalit kay Angel as the new endorser ng Jag.

"No comment na lang po ako," pag-iwas niya. "Basta nagpapasalamat po ako sa pagtitiwala nila sa akin. At salamat sa Jag, dahil kahit may Particles na ako sa shirt at may Karimadon ako for my dresses, kinuha pa rin nila ako. Salamat po, ang babait nila."

Biro pa ni Marian, wala na muna siyang lovelife. Basta happy siya sa kanyang career at marami siyang bagong commercial na gagawin.

Hindi ba siya natatakot sa Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) sa dami ng endorsements niya?

"Ay, hindi po! Nagbabayad po ako ng BIR ko, ayoko pong makulong!" tili ni Marian.

"No comment na lang po ako diyan. Basta nagpapasalamat na lang po ako sa Jag at nagtiwala rin sila sa akin," sagot ni Marian kung kaya't hindi na lang ito pinag-usapan ng maigi.

Pang-sampung endorsement na ito ni Marian since she was catapulted to fame via her first GMA-7 primetime soap Marimar. May anim pang papasok na bagong endorsements si Marian before the year ends. Ang tatlo rito, including a beauty product and a food, will be launched next month while the other three naman, still within the year.

Hiwalay pa rito ang isang U.S.-based Filipino restaurant na ie-endorse din ni Marian.

Richard's New Girl

“Maraming nagsasabi sa akin dati pa na dapat magkatrabaho kami, pero we come from two different worlds, so imposible,” explains Heart, referring to her team-up with Richard. “[That’s why] it’s very exciting na makakatrabaho ko siya. It’s going to be exciting because it’s a totally different project para sa akin—hindi siya telefantasya, at napakaganda ng casting.” The cast began shooting for the series last May 5, 2008.

Even the GMA bosses are overjoyed that...

Heart is finally part of GMA. “Syempre, natutuwa tayong lahat na si Heart ay Kapuso na, at nagpapasalamat din kami kay Mr. and Mrs. Ongpauco para sa tiwala nila. At syempre naman kay Heart [din] sa tiwala niya sa GMA,” imparts GMA EVP and COO, Gilberto Duavit Jr.

Atty. Felipe Gozon, GMA’s President and CEO, agrees. “Si Heart ay welcome na welcome sa atin dahil tayo ay Kapuso station at si Heart, sa Tagalog, ay Kapuso! At isang napakagaling na talent ‘yang si Heart.”

And what does her leading man have to say?

“Excited talaga akong makatrabaho si Heart. Matagal ko nang pinapangarap na makatrabaho si Heart,” shares Richard.

The two recently flew to Dubai to tape some scenes for the teleserye, which will be directed by Mark Reyes. “I’m looking forward to Dubai, working there, experiencing traveling with Heart, so I’m very excited,” shares Richard.

Heart is equally thrilled, and adds that traveling together will really help them to get to know each other better. But even before Dubai, Heart and Richard began bonding already. According to Heart in a Chika Minute interview, they met up in Batangas one Saturday for a small event.

Since Heart just had a rocky public breakup with Jericho Rosales, Richard promises that he’ll take care of her during their tapings. “Ako bahala sa’yo, you’re in good hands,” he assures Heart during the Codename: Asero story conference. “I’m going to make sure na sa set, masaya siya. Ang importante, kalimutan niya lahat ng problema niya, mage-enjoy kami, we’re gonna be working hard together.”

Also part of the primetime series’ cast are: Richard Gomez, Ehra Madrigal, Bubbles Paraiso, and Rocky Gutierrez, among others.

Heart is excited to be part of this new family, and we’re slowly seeing more of her in various GMA shows like S.O.P., where she has become a regular guest. Thumbs up for Caregiver

"Naghanda ba kayo ng panyo?" warned moviegoers who came to support the world premiere of Caregiver.

Before the screening began, anticipation filled the theater, which was jam-packed with Sharonians, media people, and showbiz celebrities. Everyone had high expectations. First, Caregiver is the 15th anniversary offering of Star Cinema. Second, it's the comeback movie of Sharon Cuneta after four years of absence from the silver screen. Third, it's the first...

tandem of director Chito Roño and the Megastar. Fourth, the Cinema Evaluation Board gave it a grade of "A," which means total amusement-tax exemption for excellence.

THE STORY. The movie revolves around the life of Sarah Gonzalez, an English schoolteacher in the Philippines who decides to become a caregiver in London. She has to leave her son Pau (John Manalo) to join her husband Teddy (John Estrada) who works in the world's second most expensive city next only to Moscow, Russia.

Sarah leaves the country with optimism, looking forward to being with Teddy and earning more money in British pounds. But reality begins to sink in only a few days after she is reunited with her husband.

Here come the unpredictable twists in the film: the marital problems of Sarah and Teddy, the complicated lives of the other Pinoys working in London, the hardships and friendships that Sarah experiences as a caregiver, and even the surprise ending of Caregiver.

The storytelling is good, but don't expect an elaborate narration of how a caregiver does her job, or a lot of tear-jerking moments. The focal point is on the main character, and how she copes with the troubles in her marriage and the demands of her stressful job.

It's fast-paced, with hardly no dragging scenes. Each character has his or her own struggles, and despite the many things happening around Sarah, all these are put together seamlessly.

London's famous landmarks and a bit of UK's countryside are shown but without diminishing or stealing attention from the dramatic scenes.

THE CHARACTERS. Sarah's character is not your typical brow-beaten Overseas Filipino Worker portrayed in most movies about OFWs. She's matiisin pero marunong lumaban. She endures hardship but fights back when she must.

Sarah brings out a different Sharon. The Megastar does not cry buckets of tears here, but she renders emotions deeply enough to touch one's core.

Among the movie's highlights are the quiet moment with Pau in the swing and a tension-filled scene with Teddy. As Sarah, Sharon doesn't have to cry to convey her stirring emotions. Her facial expressions and minimal gestures do the job. The caregiver is jumpy, usually unsure of herself but she knows what's right, and she's assertive when needed. In most scenes, she looks weary and worried. Sharon is truly effective in letting her audience know that she did not go to London "para magpa-picture."

Direk Chito said that John Estrada was a "revelation." Indeed, John switched his character smoothly from good to bad and vice versa, proving his versatility as an actor. If the intent was for the viewers to hate his character, John succeeded well.

The other actors had minor roles in the film yet they also made their mark. The brief scene with Anita Linda was very touching. As Sarah's lola, Anita Linda gives her granddaughter a balabal before her flight to London to keep her warm there.

Rica Peralejo who plays Karen, Sarah's fellow caregiver, ably supports the main character. Makisig Morales, a troublesome kid, puts some spice into the worn-down life of Sarah and Teddy. He also enriches Sarah's caring character. Lotlot de Leon's brief appearance also deserves the viewers' attention.

The British actor who plays Mr. Morgan, an ailing old man who initially brushes off Sarah, but eventually feels blessed by her efficiency and friendship is a standout. There are many defining moments between Sarah and Mr. Morgan.

THE IMPACT. Caregiver isn't the heavy drama that most people would expect. Dramatic scenes are lightened up by a humorous remark by Sarah or her co-workers. The movie clearly shows the various facets of Pinoys working abroad—their pains and sacrifices, dedication to their jobs, and their competence—realistically and without exaggeration.

It is definitely pro-Pinoy. Most of the scenes were filmed in London, but the visual elements are reminiscent of our culture: the bagoong and buro, the Sto. Niño, adobo, Sarah's bayong, the clannish propensity of Pinoys, family togetherness, to name a few.

It is socially relevant. It would surely uplift the spirits of the OFWs and their families, and it could be an eye-opener for women who play multiple roles—wife, mother, breadwinner. One of Sharon's unforgettable lines says it all, "Kung walang unang hakbang, paano tayo uusad? Kung uunahan tayo ng takot, paano tayo magsisimulang makipagsapalaran?"

Sarah describes her labors as a "thankless job," but the movie conveys the true dignity of Filipino caregivers in England, and by extension, in many other countries around the globe.

Now that has more bearing than the tears I initially expected to shed.

BACK TO STAR CINEMA. But now, balik na si Uge sa paggawa ng movie sa Star Cinema. Nagsimula na silang mag-shooting ni Ai-Ai delas Alas ng Ang Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat, sequel ng Ang Tanging Ina noon. Naitanong ng PEP kay Direk Wenn kung nakapagpatayo na ba siya ng replica ng Malacañang Palace sa bakanteng lote na dating kinatatayuan ng Star Cinema office, tulad ng naikuwento niya noon dahil magiging presidente ng Pilipinas si Ai Ai sa story.

"Hindi pa, kasi gusto ni Ms. Malou [Santos, head ng Star Cinema] na totoong sa Malacañang kami mag-shooting. Ewan ko kung makakakuha kami ng permit to shoot there, kahit sa isa lang office doon."

UGE'S SOLO. Natawa kami sa comment ni Mel na "goodluck na lang," na hindi na namin isinulat ang kasunod niyang sinabi dahil nagkatawanan kaming lahat. Pero bakit nga ba sila nasa Viva Films?

"Nakipag-meeting na kami kay Boss Vic del Rosario para sa solo movie ni Uge. Long-overdue na iyon. Dapat noon pa iyon nasimulan pero naging busy nga kaming lahat," nakangiting wika ni Direk Wenn.

"This time, tuloy na ang Demetria (MD). Sige, ang ibig sabihin ng MD ay matandang dalaga. Hindi pa muna namin ikukuwento, although susulatin na ni Mel ang script."

Hindi ba matagal na talaga siya dapat nabigyan ng solo movie?

"Matagal na rin akong naghintay para sa solo movie na iyan," sabi ni Eugene. "Kaya nagpapasalamat ako kay Boss Vic at sa Viva Films. Sa ngayon, hindi ko pa alam kung sinu-sino ang makakasama ko sa movie, pero hihilingin naming mag-cameo role si Ate Vi [Batangas Governor Vilma Santos] at sana mapagbigyan niya kami. Nagsimula nang mag-shooting ang tinaguriang Comedy Queen na si Ai-Ai delas Alas para sa Ang Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat, na idinidirek ni Wenn Deramas. Sequel ito ng box-office hit movie noong 2003, Ang Tanging Ina ng Star Cinema.

Binista ng PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ang shooting ng Ang Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat last May 14 sa Magnatech sa Scout Borromeo, Quezon City. Naabutan namin si Ai-Ai in her cute purple...

outfit from head to foot habang naghihintay ang very close friend niyang si Direk Malu Sevilla. Last sequence na rin ni Ai-Ai ang eksenang kukunan nang datnan namin siya sa set.

"Hindi pa ako presidente dito, maid pa lang ako ng presidente dito," kuwento ni Ai-Ai tungkol sa naturang eksena.

Two to three shooting days pa si Ai-Ai para sa Ang Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat bago siya umalis paalis ng bansa para sa series of shows niya abroad. Kasamang aalis ng bansa ni Ai-Ai ang kanyang anak na si Nicolo.

"Bale graduation gift ko sa kanya ‘to," sabi ni Ai-Ai. "Tsaka kasi gusto niyang makasama yung best friend niya na nasa U.S. na. At the same time, magkikita sila doon ng tatay niya, si Miguel [Vera]. Magge-guest din si Miguel sa show ko doon. Ang talent fee na hiningi lang niya, yung accommodation sa hotel para makasama niya ang bagets [Nicolo] sa kuwarto kahit ilang gabi lang."

Nakatakdang bumalik si Ai-Ai sa bansa on June 2 para tapusin ang bago niyang pelikula sa Star Cinema. Dahil sequel ito ng Ang Tanging Ina, kasama pa rin sa cast ang mga gumanap niyang anak na sina Marvin Agustin, Alwyn Uytingco, Jiro Manio, Shaina Magdayao, Yuki Kadooka, at ang nagbabalik-showbiz na si Serena Darlymple. Ongoing naman ang search para sa kambal na babaeng anak ni Ai-Ai for the sequel.

Out na sa Ang Tanging Ina Ninyong Lahat ang iba pang gumanap na anak ni Ai-Ai sa original movie na sina Marc Acueza at Heart Evangelista. Hindi na raw kinuha si Marc dahil wala na ito sa showbiz habang si Heart naman ay sadyang hindi na raw kinuha. Nasaktan daw kasi ang ABS-CBN management sa ginawang paglipat ni Heart sa GMA-7.

Mabuti pa si Marvin, na kahit matagal nang nasa GMA-7, ay kinuha pa rin ng Star Cinema upang gampanan muli ang papel ng panganay na anak ni Ai-Ai sa movie. Maayos naman daw kasi ang pag-alis ni Marvin sa ABS-CBN kaya very much welcome pa rin siya sa Kapamilya network.

Wala namang plano ang Star Cinema na kumuha pa ng kapalit nina Heart at Marc for their respective roles. Gagawan na lang daw ng kuwento kung bakit wala ang dalawang anak ni Ai-Ai sa movie.

"The Women of Star Cinema collection" now available

In time for Star Cinema's 15th anniversary in the film industry, Star Home Video has recently released original DVDs that will prove to be collectors' items. The Women of Star Cinema collection is now available in all record bars for fans of these award-winning actresses.

Featuring three of the most prolific female stars today—the Star For All Seasons Vilma Santos, the Megastar Sharon Cuneta and the Diamond Star Maricel Soriano—the limited collectibles feature three of their most successful films.

VILMA SANTOS. Known as the Star for all Seasons, her popularity as an actress did not fade even when she became a public servant.

Dekada '70 (2002). A story of a family caught in the middle of a tumultuous decade, Dekada '70 details how a middle-class family struggled with the new changes that empowered Filipinos to rise against the government. While the government became more oppressive, people became more radical. The suspension of the Writ of Habeas Corpus, proclamation of Martial Law, bombing of Plaza Miranda, random arrests, and detention of political prisoners shaped the decade and helped shape the character of one woman as well. All these events were witnessed by Amanda Bartolome (Vilma Santos), a mother of five boys. While her sons grew up, they formed their own beliefs and led different lives. Amanda asserted her self-identity to make her stand as a citizen, a mother, and a woman.

Anak (2000). Josie (Vilma Santos) works as a domestic helper in Hong Kong to provide a better life for her family—only to find out after several years of absence that her family has fallen apart.

Bata, Bata...Paano Ka Ginawa? (1998). Based on the Palanca award-winning novel by Lualhati Bautista, this film tells the story of Lea Bustamante (Vilma Santos), a woman who chooses to live by her own principles and not upon the dictates of society. She is a mother of two children by different men and she is in danger of losing them to their fathers.

SHARON CUNETA. The Megastar is now celebrating her 30th anniversary in showbiz and shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, her movie Caregiver is slated to be open in theaters nationwide on May 28.

Madrasta (1996). Not all stepmothers are wicked witches. In fact, many of them are like Mariel (Sharon Cuneta), a loving, caring individual who tries to belong in a family not her own and which cannot be truly hers.

Minsan, Minahal Kita (2000). Two people, both married to different partners, unexpectedly fall in love. But, their sense of duty to their respective families keeps their love in check, as well as keeping them away from each other.

Ama, Ina, Anak (1996). A touching film which discusses the issue of adoption. A film that everyone can relate to, whether you are a mother, father or child.

Soltera (1999). Sandra (Maricel Soriano) is a 35-year old wedding coordinator by profession who falls in love with Eric (Diether Ocampo), a handsome young man 12 years her junior. Their age wide gap causes conflict with Sandra's family. Worse, a romance develops between Eric and Sandra's trusted young assistant Lisa (Claudine Barretto), leading Sandra and Eric to part ways. However, all is not easy as emotional and financial issues soon rise to the surface.

Although Caregiver has heavy confrontation scenes complete with hard-hitting dialogue, it is in the quieter moments where Sharon stands out even more. In the scene where Sarah invites...

her husband (played convincingly by John Estrada) to celebrate her promotion, her eyes and face radiate with frustration when money and career become a big issue between the couple. Sharon’s few scenes with veteran actress Anita Linda, who plays her senile grandmother, are absolute tearjerkers, with feelings of hurt and heartbreak palpable in every frame.

Caregiver paints an accurate picture of these OFWs, showing the extensive training that caregivers must undertake before they can get to work in hospitals and nursing homes abroad. Oftentimes, Filipino caregivers go beyond the call of duty, seeing their wards as real people rather than just mere patients or clients. Sharon’s own character Sarah, is a compassionate woman, who later views that same compassion as a liability when it takes an emotional toll.

Sarah’s relationship with her difficult patient Mr. Morgan is one of the highlights of the film. Despite his cantankerous nature, they develop a friendship, with Mr. Morgan eventually giving Sarah a gift that changes her perception of life.

The movie also depicts the lighter side of life as an overseas worker with a bunch of light comic scenes. It shows how any Filipino will remain a Filipino no matter where life takes him around the globe. He will ask a fellow Pinoy to send him buro and bagoong and will always have a Santo Niño and Virgin Mary in his house.

The Megastar has mentioned in previous interviews how she wishes that Caregiver will make audiences appreciate how caregivers--and all OFWs for that matter—sacrifice a lot for their families and for the country. And the movie does precisely that. All in all, Caregiver is a story that could apply to each of us in our search for life’s meaning and for one’s self-worth.

Zanjoe and Angelica have a secret relationship in "Your Song"

For the next four weeks, viewers of Your Song will be able to watch a story about forbidden love for the mini-series titled "I'll Take Care of You." Starting this Sunday, June 1, watch Angelica Panganiban, Zanjoe Marudo, Wendy Valdez, and TJ Trinidad deal with marital problems and issues on infidelity.

Miguel (Zanjoe Marudo) and Ria (Angelica Panganiban) will meet due to an unexpected incident. Though both married, the two will be placed in a complicated situation that prompts them to develop a close friendship that leads to love.

How did this love come about? What will happen to their marital bond with their respective partners?

Wendy Valdez plays the role of Miguel's very demanding wife Chinney while TJ Trinidad is Aris, the caring and loving husband of Ria. Together with Angelica and Zanjoe, the lives of these four people will become intertwined in a web of discontentment, deceit, and passion.

Four "Pinoy Idol" aspirants eliminated

For the first elimination round of GMA-7's Pinoy Idol, four contestants were already booted out of the competition. The names that made the dreaded list are Drizzle Muniz, Dio Paolo, Elliot Andal and, unexpectedly, Bev Ejercito who got the lowest votes from the viewers.

This is part of the workshop stage of the local version of the Idol franchise, which has already opened voting lines for the viewers. Raymond Gutierrez did not prolong the agony of the contestants. He nonchalantly announced that Dio was the first guy to be out from the 12 males. Unlike in American Idol, he did not even review the judges' comments regarding the performance of the Idol aspirants. This shocked not only the viewers but the contestants as well.

Drizzle was the second contestant to be eliminated followed by Elliot. When Bev was about to flash her trademark smile, she received the same "sorry..." from the host since she was also eliminated from the show. This was again another shock because Bev was considered by many viewers as one of the strongest contenders for the title of Pinoy Idol.

These four aspirants could only give a heart-wrenching farewell when they waved goodbye to the crowd and the viewers of Pinoy Idol.

The remaining male finalists are Walton Zerrudo, Rye Estrada, Ram Chaves, Kid Camaya, Sherwin Marquez, Daryl Celis, Warren Antig, Toffer Rei, Robby Navarro, and JJ Jr. The ten remaining female finalists are Regene Ong, Jayanne Bautista, Sue Ellen, Carol Leus, Penelope, Meryl David, Vren Villaflor, Mae Flores, Jeni Rawolle, and Gretchen Espina.

These 20 singers will continue their Pinoy Idol journey as they face another battle on May 30, Friday, and May 31, Saturday. The next elimination will be on June 1, Sunday.

Raki Vega to compete in ASEAN IKON Philippines

Can Raki Vega do what Vina Morales did during last year's ASEAN IKON competition? Last year, Vina brought pride to the country when she was hailed as the winner in the solo artist category of the regional singing competition held in Malaysia. This year, Raki has been chosen by Star Records to be its bet in the upcoming ASEAN IKON Philippines competition. She will be competing with other Pinoy singers for the chance to represent the Philippines.

The record label has also allowed Raki to start recording for a concept cover album that will showcase her vocal power and ingenuity. TV host Boy Abunda was so amazed by her talent that he asked her to sing the Michael Jackson original "Childhood" for his album Love Life, which was released earlier this year. In the press conference to promote the album, Boy was quick to express his fondness for Raki's ability to sing beautifully. Boy Abunda has been given the Gold Record Award for the brisk sales of his album Love Life.

"It feels fortunate to be seeing the breaks coming at such a fast rate," Raki said about the string of blessings coming her way.

A long-time choir singer and a voice coach herself, Raki was introduced to the public years back when she won the grand prize winner in ABS-CBN's singing competition Born Diva. She represented the Philippines in the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) held in Hollywood last year. She was able to reach the grand finals along with Jed Madela, the Cercado Sisters, Reymond Sajor, and Aria Clemente. Nikki Gil releases second album "Hear My Heart"

It took Nikki Gil quite some time to come up with a follow-up project to her 2005 eponymous debut album. But according to the singer-actress, it was worth the wait.

"I'm very excited about it kasi matagal ko ng kinukulit ang EMI na irelease ‘to. It's actually two years in the making since my first album so I really wanted it to be extra special," said Nikki to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during the launching of her second album. The CD titled Hear My Heart was formally launched at Dencio's Bar and Grill at the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City last May 24.

What took her so long to come up with a follow up? "Maybe timing," replied Nikki immediately. "There were so many things happening to me at that time. I was just starting up in the industry so there were these random projects that I had to honor first and medyo singing took a backseat because I got into hosting, I got into acting, being a VJ."

NIKKI THE SONGSMITH. The long gap between her first and second album proved to be a blessing in disguise as it provided the young singer ample time to try her hand at songwriting. Teaming up with little sister Danela, the two collaborated to produce the album's title track and the upbeat number titled "Friday."

"I wanted to contribute naman to the OPM scene with at least two tracks," she explained. The novice songwriter initially felt nervous about putting out her original composition. "I was apprehensive at first because we all know that the more effective songwriters only come up with songs based on their personal experiences. So, natatakot ako na pag naglabas ako ng kanta na that I solely wrote then they might say ‘Uy, para kanino ‘yan...sinong pinag-uusapan' may ganoong factor."

COOL WITH COVERS. Maturity brought upon by personal experiences also allowed Nikki to sing now with more conviction as compared before when she was still a naïve upstart trying her luck in the business.

"I can say I sing with more heart now because most of those tracks they're actually things I have gone through in life."

Nikki candidly admitted that if she would only have it her way, she'd love to produce an album comprised of all-original songs written by local composers. But she also understands the appeal of recording well-loved hits to instantly catch the attention of the listeners.

"Well, trend dictates that I do covers," acknowledged Nikki sans any hint of bitterness. "Covers are effective because they were hits before so parang formula na ‘yan, e, tried and tested na ‘yan dati. All you have to do is bring it to present times—tweak the arrangement a bit and add a different flavor to it."

UNABASHEDLY ROMANTIC. The song choices, as expected, cater to the Pinoy's delicate taste when it comes to music.

"Mostly love songs because Filipinos are very into that and so am I," she said with a laugh. The label gave Nikki liberty to choose the songs, as presented to her, and even accepted the some of the young singer's suggestions. Wearing a grin, Nikki confided, "Some, like I really force them to put it in there like "On my Knees," "Buses and Trains" and the two original songs. Pinilit ko talaga ‘yon."

As cliché as it may sound, Nikki stressed that she's very proud of this new record simply because she invested more of herself as compared to her self-titled debut album. The singer-actress pointed out that this album is a reflection of her growth in the music industry.

"Two years in the business, countless hours of rehearsal and actual performances, and exposure to thousands of different audiences have kind of matured me musically," wrote Nikki to her fans. "This album should project a more real me and hopefully strike a stronger bond between me and my listeners."

Nikki is currently busy finishing a teleserye for ABS-CBN's Susan Roces Collection titled Florinda. Aside from being an ASAP ‘08 co-host, she is also expected to be one of the hosts of Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2.

MCA Music releases "Kung Fu Panda" soundtrack

Teen idol Sam Concepcion has recorded his version of "Kung Fu Fighting," which is included in the soundtrack album of the animated film Kung Fu Panda. To be distributed by MCA Music, this makes Concepcion the first local artist to have sung for the Hollywood film company DreamWorks.

Apart being part of the Kung Fu Panda album, Sam's version of the movie's theme song will be played during the end credits of the Philippine run. United International Pictures also produced a music video for the young singer. Mostly shot in a Chinese temple, it features snippets from Kung Fu Panda and computer-generated animation made just for the music video.

"It is a rare occasion for a Hollywood movie to have a local artist sing in the soundtrack album. This is Sam's first international recording break, and he truly deserves it," said Selina de Venecia, United International Pictures' general manager.

Pop superstar Rain also recorded "Kung Fu Fighting" for DreamWorks in Korea. Meanwhile, R&B artist and song producer Cee-lo Green recorded the same song for the U.S. release.

The animated film Kung Fu Panda is about Po the Panda, the laziest animal in all of the Valley of Peace, but accidentally turns out to be the chosen one when enemies threaten their way of life. DreamWorks Animation SKG presents Kung Fu Panda, a Paramount Pictures release featuring the voices of Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogan, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Randall Duk Kim, James Hong, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Dan Fogler.

Kung Fu Panda opens June 6 in the Philippines. The official soundtrack is available in record stores nationwide only from MCA Music.

OJ Mariano to perform with Rico J. Puno on June 5

OJ Mariano was first introduced to the public via Star in a Million Season 2 where he won 2nd runner-up and the "Texters' Choice" Award. The grand champion of this singing competition was Frenchie Dy while the 1st runner-up was Nyco Maca who now plays with the band Playground.

OJ, whose real name is Ramon Enrique, has released his second single titled "Sana'y Malaman Mo," a romantic song from hit maker Marlon Silva. This song is one of 12 tracks included in his second album titled Ballads released by Star Records. OJ's single has been chosen as the official theme song of the Mexican telenovela El Cuerpo del Deo aired every afternoon on ABS-CBN.

The 2006 Awit Awards Best New Male Recording Artist sat down with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) to talk about his new album and his upcoming concert this June.

"I started making this album around December 2007. I made a list of my favorite songs while other songs were suggested by family members. There are two original compositions in Ballads, ‘Sana'y Malaman Mo' and ‘Di Ka Na Akin.'

"Most of the time, when I perform, the audience members always tell me na gusto nila kung nagpe-perform ako ng ballads. Naa-appreciate nila ang mga kanta ko."

Dennis Arce, OJ's manager, explains: "The concept of the album is, of course, ballads na cool sa pandinig kaya kung makikita mo diyan [sa album cover], nagpapahinga siya diyan. Nakasandal lang siya na parang relaxed na relaxed."

When asked to describe his life after joining Star in a Million, OJ says, "Sobrang drastic. Nag-180 degree turn. I never really imagined joining this business kasi masaya na ako dati na kumakanta sa choir na Novo Concertante Manila."

Since joining this televised singing competition, OJ has become a recording artist, toured various malls to promote his CDs, and performed here and abroad. In fact, he has just come back to the country after performing for Filipinos in San Diego, California last May 5.

He points out that the song "Iniibig Kita" is composed by Maestro Ryan Cayabyab himself. "Ang kumanta pa lang niyan ay ang Philippine Madrigal Singers and the San Miguel Master Chorale. It's a song na all-male and ever since na napakinggan ko siya, sabi ko sarili ko na if I make an album, I'll make a version of the song."

This makes OJ the first solo artist to record this love song.

THE POWER OF J. OJ used to be the front act of Rico J. Puno in previous concerts but now, the Star in a Million alumnus now shares top billing with the OPM artist. Special guests include the Soul Siren Nina and Rufa Mae Quinto with standup comedians Le Chazz and Jeff Vasquez. The Power of J is produced by Front Desk Entertainment Production and DGA Entertainment.

Also featured in the new album is the Peabo Bryson hit classic "If Ever You're In My Arms Again," the album's carrier single. Ballads also features OPM revivals such as Boy Katindig's "I Will Always Stay in Love This Way" and "It's Over Now" by Joey Albert and Louie Ocampo.

Other revivals in Ballads are "In Your Eyes" originally by George Benson (chosen as another theme song for the ABS-CBN Koreanovela Lovers), the classic favorite "Sukiyaki," Eagle's big hit "Love Will Keep Us Alive," and the haunting "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross.

All songs are arranged and produced by Paulo Zarate. The album's executive producers are Dennis G. Arce and OJ Mariano himself.

Part of the sales of the "Ballads" album will go to the projects of the Environmental Protection Program of Quezon City, particularly, the Sweepers' Brigade Project as its beneficiary.

Marian Rivera ready to face more intrigues

Marian Rivera is already expecting that the entertainment media would ask her about the controversial YouTube video that spread on the Internet recently.

In the media junket prepared for her newest Jag endorsement last May 30 at the Dulcinea in Tomas Morato, Quezon City, Marian said that she never watched the said video, which showed her confronting a man on the set of Dyesebel.

She added that she just relied on what the other people told her about it. "Actually, sa lahat naman ng nag-text at nagsabi sa akin, isa lang ang sinasabi nila sa akin, walang kuwenta daw."

She said, "Kahit mangyari po ulit 'yan, kahit nasaan ako, basta may nambastos sa akin at inapi ang pagkatao ko, lalabanan ko talaga."

The young actress also defended herself to the people who are saying that her actions made her look like an uneducated person. She explained, "'Yon lang din kasi yung personality ko, e. Parang sinasabi ko din na, ‘Hindi ako nakatapos ng college, hindi ako maledukada para ganunin lang ng isang tao.' Hindi porke't lumaban ako, ibig sabihin wala akong pinag-aralan. Kaya nga ako may pinag-aralan para alam ko kung papaano ko maipagtatanggol ang sarili ko.

"Kung sa kanila po may masama akong nagawa, e, hindi naman po lahat ng tao mapi-please. Lagi ko nga pong sinasabi, kahit na minu-minuto nila ipalabas ang video na 'yan, araw-araw ko pa ring ganun pa rin ang gagawin ko. Ipagtatanggol ko pa rin ang sarili ko kahit kanino."

Did she have a chance to meet the guy on the video after the incident?

"Actually, pumunta siya doon sa set namin," answered Marian. "Hindi naman daw niya talaga gusto na magsalita o siraan ako dahil wala naman daw siyang negative about sa akin. Kung na-disappoint or may nasabi man daw siya sa akin, hindi daw niya sinasadya 'yon."

She continued, "Well, hindi ko din gustong makipag-away. Sino ba namang tao ang gustong may kaaway, di ba? Gusto niya ding makipag-ayos, so napag-usapan naman ng EP [executive producer] yun."

DEMOLITION JOB? Some people were saying that this video was just part of a demolition job against her. Marian, however, did not think of it this way. Instead, Marian just said, "Ipagdarasal ko na lang sila. Di ba, hindi man ako makabawi sa kanila, ang Diyos na lang ang bahala sa kanila."

The Dyesebel actress also ignored the rumor saying that the people who did this were just jealous about her and her blooming career.

In fact, she humbly told the press, "Ayaw ko naman pong sabihin na naiinggit sila, di ba? Siguro sabihin na lang po natin na mas marami po ang nagtitiwala at nagmamahal sa akin kaysa po sabihin na maraming naiinggit."

Marian is also clueless why this video was posted on YouTube a month after the incident has happened. But she never thought that it was posted intentionally to ruin her image to the public.

In fact, the young actress is disappointed because she always thought, "Di ba, kapag may isang artista na umaangat o maraming napapaligaya, dapat nga masaya sila, e. Pero may mga tao po palang ganun.

"Pero wala naman po tayong magagawa kung may ganung klaseng tao, sila na po yung nagdadala. As long as totoo ako sa sarili ko, alam kong wala akong natapakan, at tama yung ginawa ko, marami akong napapasayang tao lalo na yung mga bata, okay na ako doon. Bahala na sila kung pulaan nila ako, wala na akong magagawa roon."

GRATEFUL TO HER FANS. Marian was also thankful to all the people who stood by her side after the video was shown in public. She also put in mind what some of her supporters told her about this issue, "Part 'yan ng buhay. Deadma lang."

Marian also gave some reminders to the fans who fight for her on different forums on the Internet: "Huwag na kayong makipag-away kasi wala namang magagawa 'yon, e. Ang importante mahal ninyo ako, hindi nagbago, lalo ninyo akong minahal."

She added, "Relax lang kayo, wala 'yon. As long as alam n'yong tama kayo, wala kayong inaapakan na tao, okay lang 'yon na gawin. Pero kung wala naman, huwag!"

Dennis Trillo is not quite ready to bare; talks about Carlene and Rufa Mae

Dennis Trillo's sexy dance sequence in one particular episode in the afternoon drama Magdusa Ka had caused quite a stir. StarTalk was able to corner Dennis while shooting the film I.T.A.L.Y, and asked him whether he is now ready to shed his boyish image for a more daring role.

Dennis, who looked quite unsure, said "Siguro willing, pero hindi naman ganoon eksaktong eksena. Siguro puwede naman na i-showcase yung iba ko pang talent sa ibang paraan, di ba?"

Dennis also said that he has no plans in...

revealing more of himself and join the "daring bandwagon"—a move previously made by fellow Kapuso actor Dingdong Dantes, who recently showed skin in Bench's billboards. However, he hinted that it might be possible.

How is Dennis taking all of this news? Is it possible for him and his ex-girlfriend to team up in future projects?

Dennis said, "Hindi ko alam, pero siguro moral support na lang muna dahil hindi ko alam kung ready ako na makasama siya sa isang eksena o anong project. May sari-sarili naman kaming career, e, and siguro hindi naman kailangan na magsama if ever na mapunta siya sa showbiz, di ba?"

Aside from Carlene's announcement that she would join showbiz, news also came out that Carlene is again accepting suitors. Does Dennis have any reaction to this?

"Hindi ko na pinahihimasukan yung part na yun sa personal niyang buhay," Dennis answered. "Kumbaga, lahat naman tayo may karapatan lumigaya and she deserves it so, kung meron man, e, di, bakit hindi? Tutal, maayos naman kami and magkaibigan naman kami."

ON RUFA MA QUINTO. Dennis was quite surprised upon learning about the issue on his supposed tampuhan with I.T.A.L.Y co-star Rufa Mae Quinto that the latter revealed last week.

"Sumama loob niya?" Dennis asked, looking surprised. "Matagal na rin yun, e, at ayoko nang ungkatin kung ano nangyari."

When asked if they are okay now, he replied, "Okay na. Actually noong last Sunday nag-usap na kami."

Rufa Mae's revelation fueled speculations that she is again showing special interest on Dennis. What can Dennis say about these speculations?

"Siguro," he joked, "hinde ko masabi, e, siguro itanong mo sa kanya."

Dingdong Avanzado and wife Jessa Zaragoza with their daughter Jayda arrived from the U.S. before dawn yesterday, May 31. The couple looked more than ready to face the controversies surrounding them and comedienne Rufa Mae Quinto.

As StaTalk greeted the couple at the NAIA terminal, they couldn't help but ask if the couple has finally given...

closure to the issue. Dingdong positively answered, "Yes, definitely isa ‘yan sa mga nais namin na masara. At maka-move on a rin, sabi nga niya [Rufa Mae], di ba? Pero isara natin nang tama.

"Sa parte na magsasalita ako, I think I'll leave to God if he would allow that opportunity. Pero honestly, I'm also prepared kung kinakailangan kong magsalita."

Jessa also has a plan ready just in case she meets Rufa Mae in person. She said, "Kung magkikita kami, willing ako anytime anywhere na makipag usap sa kanya."

Now that they're here, is closure the only purpose of their visit?

"We came back kasi we needed to settle some unfinished business," Dingdong said. "So it's a vacation, pero marami kaming kailangan tapusin bago kami bumalik doon [U.S.], e."

Jessa added, "Unang-una, siyempre si Dingdong gusto niya dito i-celebrate yung 40th birthday niya sa July 7. ‘Tapos ako naman, I have to finish my album na hopefully ma-release by September. Siyempre birthday din ni Jayda sa June 1, five years old na siya. At isa pa, magkaka-load ulit kami sa celebrity golf tournament sa Guam."

RUMORS, RUMORS. Even before the celebrity couple arrived in the Philippines, rumors started to brew up that they're selling their house in the U.S. in order for them to stay put in the Philippines.In fact, they reportedly conducted a garage sale there recently.

"That's not true," Jessa denied. "Siyempre babalik pa kami sa Amerika. Kasi unang-una, ginawa namin ito at naging Greencard holder kami. Hindi naman ita-take din yung risk na mawala yung pinaghirapan namin, di ba?"

CLOSURE WITH RUFA MAE. Rufa Mae's tell-all interview with YES! magazine started the issue with her and couple. Is Jessa finally ready to face and speak with her old friend?

"Alam mo honestly, ako, kung magkikita man kami, willing ako anytime, anywhere na makipag-usap sa kanya. Kasi wala naman akong itinatago at nagsasabi ako ng totoo. Ready ako sa kung ano man. Walang problema sa akin yun," said Jessa.

Dingdong added, "Sa akin, wala din problema yun kung magkita kami. Maliit ang mundo mg showbiz. Pero hindi naman kami nakikipag-away sa kanya, e. In fact, di ba, dapat tapos na ito last year pa?"

The exchange between and Jessa and Rufa Mae escalated while Dingdong not saying his piece. For the first time, he expressed his opinion to StarTalk on the matter.

"Actually yung galit, hindi galit, e. Siyempre naiinis ka, di ba? Pero alam mo ang conception kasi ng tao, e, showbiz. Everything's about conception, e. And kami, tahimik ang buhay namin sa Amerika, although we're still doing shows. Pero in the sense na yung private life namin, we wanted it talaga to be low key. "

In a tone of frustration, Dingdong followed, "Nabuksan ulit, napasok ulit. Parang I want to sweep everything under the rug after you said something...'tapos sasabihin mo na ganoon na lang yun, kalimutan na lang. Nakikita namin yung statements niya [Rufa Mae], yung mga pahayag niya, pahayag ng ibang tao, mga opinion...masakit. Masakit kasi they don't know what the truth was, what the truth is, what really happened.

"You know, I guess sa akin lang, e, lumabas lang yung katotohanan. Let's put to rest kung ano man ang iniisp ni ganito, ni ganyan. Let's just stick to the facts... After that, we can all hopefully move on."

Is part of moving on include fixing the relationship between the couple and Rufa Mae?

"I can't really say," Dingdong admitted. "Pero siyempre, walang may gusto ng kaaway. Kaya nagulat kami na kailangan gumawa pa siya ng ganito na hindi man lang naisip yung repercussions sa mga nasabi niya. I mean, kahit sabihin pa niya na karapatan niya yun and all. Pero I'm sure even the people around her would know and understand that there was no need for her to say those things. But now that she has, and she says her right, well it's also our right then, to also respond."

Martinez family wants to teach Baron Geisler a lesson

No compensation money will ever change the minds of showbiz couple Yayo Aguila and William Martinez and their daughter Patricia. They vowed not to back down from the sexual harassment case they filed against Yayo's former Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition housemate Baron Geisler—even if it's millions of pesos.

The acts of lasciviousness case filed by Patricia had reached all the way up to the Department of Justice office (DOJ). The case, which was...

filed against Baron, is now ongoing though Baron was absent during the preliminary hearings; a representative stood in for him.

People might remember that the incident between Baron and Patricia happened when Yayo was in the United States. Baron reportedly sent a text message to Yayo, saying that he was sorry. However, Yayo shared to StarTalk that she could not understand why Baron—who's a sweet person according to her—allegedly sexually harassed her 22-year-old daughter.

"Bilang kaibigan at bilang taong malapit sa kanya at alam kong ang talagang ugali niya dahil nagsama kami ng matagal," said Yayo. "So who would see that this would happen or that it would happen to my daughter by somebody who's very close to us?"

The effect on what happened to Patricia took its toll on the young girl as content on the Internet showed negative things being written about her, and the fact that she has to be accompanied whenever she goes out. As Yayo explained, "Naninikip dibdib niya at nalulungkot siya kasi bakit ganoon at alam niya na affected din kami."

If there's one negative thing that affects the whole Martinez family, it's the rumor that money is their primary aim out of this issue. William strongly objected this news by exclaiming, "They're wrong, kahit i-push pa to ten million ang bribe, e, ayaw namin. Si Patricia kasi, she told me na ang purpose kaya ginawa niya ito ay para matulungan din ang ibang babae na binabastos ng mga lasing na lalake. We want him [Baron] to learn a lesson kasi the only way to learn is to undergo this kind of thing."

So in other words, is the Martinez family not willing to fix this issue outside of court?

"No," William answered immediately. "Si Patricia ayaw din."

Gumulo ang desisyon ng nagdadalantaong na young actress nang marinig niya ang pahayag ng manager ni Patrick Garcia na si Arnold Vegafria via text sa radio program nina Cristy Fermin at Jobert Sucaldito. Ayon kasi sa manager ni Patrick, kamag-anak niya ang nasabing good...

Inalam naman ni Jennylyn kung totoong kamag-anak ni Arnold ang nagmamagandang-loob sa kanya na sa U.S. na manganak. Pero ang nakuha niyang sagot ay hindi raw ito kamag-anak ni Arnold. Best friend lang daw nito ang kapatid ni Arnold na nagngangalang Nancy.

Hindi pa rin masyadong kumbinsido si Jennylyn kaya hanggang ngayon ay naguguluhan pa rin siya. Nakapagdesisyon na sana ang young actress na tanggapin ang offer ng good Samaritan, pero dahil dahil sa statement ni Arnold ay parang gusto na raw niyang mag-backout.

PEP: Lea Salonga captivates Filipino audience anew in "Lea, My Life... On Stage!"

We were able to catch the last night of Lea Salonga's 30th anniversary concert titled Lea, My Life... On Stage! last May 24 at the PICC Plenary Hall in Manila.

Seeing Lea perform on stage is truly a magical feeling. She was obviously very comfortable on stage as she rendered musical numbers in connection with her 30 years in the entertainment industry.

Lea's story was told in a very entertaining manner with the international star grabbing everyone's attention with her crystal-clear voice and very charming persona. With her brother, Gerald Salonga, conducting the Filharmonika, it was a world-class musical showcase.

In the two-hour concert, the audience learned that at the age of seven, Lea started her career in the entertainment industry when she auditioned the role of one of the King's children in Repertory Philippines' The King and I; that her first lead role was in the stage production of Annie; that her first album was Small Voice; that her first TV show was Love Lea; and so on and so forth.

The audience also learned how hard it was for Lea to shift from being a child actress on stage to a teenage pop star, when she joined the original cast of the youth-oriented show That's Entertainment and toured with the popular Puerto Rican boy-band Menudo.

Lea struggled during those times, following what the producers and the public dictate. All throughout, she admitted feeling "nothing."

Then came the project that she was destined to play: Miss Saigon. This served as Lea's turning point and the start of stardom that she never imagined.

Lea also did not disappoint the audience when she allowed a peek into her personal life—meeting and marrying Robert Chien and being a mother to Nicole.

All these highlights from the career and life of Lea were told in simple but elegant musical numbers that showed Lea's enigmatic presence on stage.

From her childhood days, she did her popular songs, "Tomorrow," "Small Voice," and "Rainbow Connection." From her teenage years, she sang popcorn songs, like "If You're Not Here."

To highlight her Miss Saigon days, Lea and her guests—theater actors Robbie Guevarra, Raul Montesa, Michael Williams, Charrie Arespacochaga, Analyn Bantug, and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo—did a medley of songs from the Tony award-winning musical that also won Lea a Best Actress award.

Lea also paid tribute to the West End by singing "Where Is Love" and "As Long As He Needs Me" from the musical Oliver.

After West End, Lea moved to New York when she was chosen by Cameron Macintosh to open Miss Saigon in Broadway.

Then came Flower Drum Song, which Lea calls her "most successful flop." Although it was well received in Los Angeles, the New York critics did not like it too much.

While doing Flower Drum Song in Los Angeles, Lea also found love in the person of Robert Chien. This was also the cue for Lea to sing the following love songs: "Fallin'," "I Still Believe In Love," Kailan?," and "Two Words."

"Two Words" was composed by Louie Ocampo and Freddie Santos specially for Lea's wedding with Robert. While Lea was singing this song, a video of their wedding was shown, capturing one of Lea's most memorable moments in her life—and Robert's crying moment.

Lea also shared the joy being a mother to Nicole.

The international singer also sang some cuts from her albums, like "I Honestly Love You"; We Could Be In Love"; Promise Me"; and "The Journey."

In the last part of the concert, Lea sang the theme songs of the animated movies Aladdin ("A Whole New World") and Mulan ("Reflections"), to which she had lent her voice.

Aside from Lea's colleagues in the world of theater, Aga Muhlach, her leading man in the movies Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal and Sana Maulit Muli, was her guest and he almost stole her show.

The matinee idol served as comic relief to the show, making a surprise entrance three times—first, during the New York portion, then during the album-collection portion, and finally while Lea was singing "Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal."

Aga was a hit among the audience—including wife Charlene Gonzalez-Muhlach and their twins Andres and Atasha—as he made fun of himself, Lea, and even the orchestra. Aga complained that in the two movies he did with Lea, he was never included in the soundtrack.

In the end, Lea granted his wish and they did a duet of "Sana Maulit Muli."

For her encore number, Lea and her guests did a powerful rendition of "I Dreamed A Dream" and another song from Les Miserables, in which Lea played Fantine and Eponine in separate Broadway productions, and a cut from her upcoming musical play Cinderella.

At the end of her performance, Lea was given a well-deserved standing ovation.

It is very rare that Filipinos get the chance to see Lea perform since most of the time, she's abroad making us proud. So in this very rare moment, we feel honored to have witnessed Lea's musical gifts.
